ClimeCo, a global leader in sustainability and decarbonization solutions, proudly participated in a critical panel discussion at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. CEO and President William Flederbach Jr. represented ClimeCo on a U.S. Center panel titled “Slashing N2O Emissions: From Science to Action,” focusing on the urgent need to address nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in the fight against climate change.

Addressing a Critical Climate Challenge
Bringing together experts from Climate Advisers, the International Nitrogen Initiative, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, and other mission-driven organizations, the panel highlighted the critical importance of mitigating N2O emissions. As a super pollutant with a global warming potential 273 times greater than CO2, N2O poses a significant threat to our climate goals. During the session, Flederbach shared insights from ClimeCo’s pioneering work in industrial N2O mitigation – starting with our first verified N2O abatement project in 2010 – emphasizing the company’s role in developing and implementing innovative solutions that are making a tangible impact today.
He also highlighted ClimeCo’s recent progress in China, as ClimeCo has signed agreements for four major projects in the country. These projects are expected to abate 45 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually, marking a substantial step forward in ClimeCo’s international N2O mitigation efforts. This expansion into the Chinese market represents a critical move in addressing global N2O emissions, as China is a key player in industrial production.
ClimeCo’s Trailblazing Contributions
ClimeCo’s longstanding track record in N2O abatement includes:
- A total of 36.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent reductions created by ClimeCo and its industrial gas partners in the United States.
- Successful implementation of advanced technologies pushing efficiency rates to 99.9% in projects like the adipic acid facility at Ascend Performance Materials.
- Development of robust protocols ensuring real, additional, and permanent reductions.
“Our work in N2O abatement represents one of the most cost-effective and impactful areas for emissions reduction,” Flederbach said. “Through technological innovation and strategic partnerships, we’re not just talking about climate action – we’re delivering measurable results on a significant scale.”
The Role of Voluntary Carbon Markets
The discussion also touched on the crucial role of voluntary carbon markets in financing and scaling N2O mitigation efforts. Flederbach emphasized how these markets have been instrumental in making projects economically viable and driving continued innovation in the field.
Looking Ahead
As COP29 continues to shape global climate policy, ClimeCo remains committed to advancing industrial N2O mitigation as a key strategy in the fight against climate change. The company’s participation in this high-level panel underscores its position as a leader in developing practical, effective solutions to one of our most pressing environmental challenges.
“The urgency of addressing N2O emissions cannot be overstated,” Flederbach concluded. “At ClimeCo, we’re dedicated to expanding our impact, fostering partnerships, and continuing to innovate in ways that make a real difference for our planet’s future.”
